1+1 Architects has been awarded first prize for its design for A New Landmark for Antalya, in a competition held by the Municipality of Kepez, a major tourism city on the coast of Turkey in the Mediterranean.
The competition called for a proposal of a landmark to introduce the metropolitan area of Antalya to the world, while providing a public cultural and activity center for day-to-day life. In response, 1+1 Architects’ project marries the notion of a prominent landmark, and the idea of adapting to the natural landscape.
Thus, the intention of the design is to work “as a part of a system that is adaptable to the natural context, topography, and changing urban environment” of the area.
Borrowing from the meaning of “Kepez,” the proposed landmark is an “open crown” located on the topographical peak of the building site, and has views of the Antalya Gulf, as well as the city center. As an urban park, the space will include exhibition spaces, workshops, offices, a restaurant, a panoramic terrace, a café, a gift shop, and recreational areas, among other features.
Overall, the site will be very pedestrian-friendly, with ample space to experience nature by walking, jogging, and biking, all of which ties into the open circulation system and semi-open spaces within the building for natural ventilation.
The landmark will additionally incorporate sustainable systems like rainwater collection and solar power.
The practice is currently in communication with the city to finalize any possible building plans.
